Glimmer
Bread Alone has inspired us to work more sustainably since we first visited the solar-powered bakery in Kingston back in 2017.
To celebrate the launch of their carbon-neutral, and completely fossil-fuel free bakery in the Catskills, we collaborated with Bread Alone to create Glimmer, a new Farmhouse Lager.
During the production process of Glimmer, we’ve been working on some new ways to reduce our impact on the environment and to take custody of the consequences of our work.
Bread Alone is leading the way to a more sustainable Hudson Valley. Head to their website to learn more about their sustainability journey and their new carbon-neutral facility in Boiceville, NY.
The grain for Glimmer, as well as a growing portion of the grain for our local farmhouse ale program, was delivered to us fully without the use of fossil fuels. While shipping remains a large part of our carbon footprint, our work with the St. Apollonia schooner, helps us lower the impact.
The grains are ferried down the Hudson River from Germantown, NY aboard a sailboat and then pedaled up the hill to our brewery with electric-assist bicycles. Sam and his team the the St. Apollonia bring us monthly grain deliveries now, and they take cargo throughout New York helping to revitalize a sustainable approach to shipping.
We’ve been dedicating more energy toward our reuse and recycling programs. We have been collecting, cleaning, sanitizing, and reusing plastic Paktechs for our cans for a while now, and through our Paktech return program at the brewery, your Paktech can be reused before it needs to be recycled. While some communities may allow you to recycle these curbside, the best thing you can do is bring them back to the brewery so we can reuse them! Drop off your used Paktechs when you pick up your next order and help us close our loop!
The can labels for Glimmer are printed on recycled kraft paper and we’re hoping to incorporate more recycled materials into our label design for new cans and bottles in the future!
We’ve also been working hard to find ways to reuse some of the by-products from our production process. Most recently, we started shredding discarded cardboard and using it as packing material for shipping, eliminating bubble wrap and packing peanuts completely.
We’re still a long way from our sustainability goals, but each step we take teaches us more about our responsibilities as a producer and helps us become conscious of our waste.
Bread Alone has been a great resource and example for us and we’re very excited to be working with them to help inspire other business in the Hudson Valley to consider the impact of their work on the environment.
Be sure to check out Bread Alone on your next visit to the Hudson Valley and look our for the opening of their new bakery in Boiceville later this Fall!
